While the top bar and the header for the Windows Explorer window are the same size across all themes, Windows 8 introduced several new styles that reflect the new theme. These styles are subtly modified to blend in better with the rest of the Windows Look and feel.
Windows Explorer windows are now themed to use a light-gray theme that is slightly darker than the other theme swatches; in Windows 8, most of the individual Explorer windows are gray and therefore fill the entire screen, providing a consistent look across all modern and classic themes. The new colors were borrowed from the Windows Classic theme.[201] Explorer windows are the only Windows application in Windows 8 to retain this scheme.[202] It is assumed that this inherited appearance stems from the version of Explorer that was used in Windows 7.
Windows 8 replaced the 32-pixel icon Windows 7 uses on the taskbar with a '16x16' icon in the taskbar, and an 18x16 icon in the Start Menu. This new icon causes a cosmetic change to the Windows 8 theme, including replacing the light gray with a darker gray.[203] The mouse cursor is also higher-contrast on Windows 8, though it still fades in and out of use with transparency. This scheme was derived from Windows Classic, with some variations.[204] All Windows 8 widgets use the 18x18 icon, regardless of their appearance on other platforms.[205] The 32-pixel icon and environment were inherited.
Windows Media Centre (WMC) has been updated. It was improved to be compatible with all operating systems in Windows 8. This version has been codenamed "Libra" and the new features include, but are not limited to: d2c66b5586
