Chiang's fiction finally reveals the racial dimensions of postracial ethos. The very act of assimilating to this ideology ends the possibility of putative reconciliation between humans and nonhumans. Rather than end the human-nonhuman division, Chiang writes, the postracial forces us toward an ultimate contradiction: between (in Chang's words) "The human and the nonhuman," and the possibility that "the nonhuman might be human." In Louise's own house, the woman of the house tries to identify herself as "human (or nearly human)" only to discover that "she is indistinguishable from a Heptapod." Thus, postracialism drives the very same reassurance that an anti-racist campaign such as affirmative action postpones: for example, the integration of corporations into the social polity guarantees a single racial identity, which will, in turn, exclude the possibility that racial difference would not be "known for being racial." Within a capitalist economy, Chiang's postracial fiction maintains, all possibility of racially ordered language and thought must be eliminated, because economic order determines the ontology of racial categories. The points of analytic meditation that follow in this essay are an attempt to recover Chiang's implicit narrative, postracial vision.

Chiang's story at once distributes itself into two perspectives: the perspective of the human and the perspective of the nonhuman. The story is told from both human and nonhuman points of view. As with all narratives of racial politics, this structure follows the old pattern of a racial logic leading to a conflation of human and nonhuman perspectives. The story ends where it all begins: in 1950s Taiwan with its segregated racial politics. Some of the details of this town, such as the Kuomintang's continuing sequestration of Chiang's family, will upset this narrative and dampen its central logic, but these details will not stop the story from moving forward in the mode of postracial thought.
